Tomodachi Life Import Images
One of the most creative features in Tomodachi Life is the ability to design custom items — from T-shirts and hats to room decorations and album covers. But the game doesn't have a direct "import image" button. So how do you get your favourite photos, logos, and artwork into Tomodachi Life? That's where Living the Grid comes in.
Can You Directly Import Images into Tomodachi Life?
No — Tomodachi Life (both the 3DS original and Living the Dream on Switch) doesn't support direct image uploads. You can't transfer a JPEG from your phone into the game. Instead, the game gives you Palette House, a built-in painting tool with brushes, colours, and a grid canvas. To "import" an image, you need to manually recreate it using these in-game tools.
This is exactly the problem Living the Grid solves. It converts your image into a pixel-by-pixel blueprint that you can follow inside Palette House.
Step-by-Step: Import Images into Tomodachi Life
1. Choose Your Image
Pick any image you want to recreate in-game. Good candidates include:
- Simple logos and icons
- Cartoon characters and anime faces
- Flags and emblems
- Pixel art and retro game sprites
- Pet photos (works best with the Dither option)
High-contrast images with bold colours work best. Very detailed photographs will need more colours and larger grid sizes.
2. Convert with Living the Grid
Open Living the Grid and upload your image. The tool will:
- Resize it to fit the Tomodachi Life canvas grid
- Reduce colours to match the game's 84-swatch palette
- Generate a cell-by-cell recipe with colour codes
- Show exact H/S/B values for the in-game colour picker
3. Select the Right Canvas
Match the canvas type to what you're designing in-game:
- Square — T-shirt prints, album covers, general icons
- Book cover — In-game book jacket designs
- TV screen — Apartment TV display art
- Interior — Wallpaper and floor tile patterns
4. Optimize Settings
For importing images into Tomodachi Life, these settings matter:
- Brush size 8 px is the best balance of detail vs. painting effort
- Game palette ensures every colour exists in the game's picker
- Max colours 8–12 keeps painting manageable
- Turn on Dither for photos with gradients or skin tones
- Turn on Labels to see colour codes on each cell
5. Unlock Palette House
If you haven't already, you need to unlock the Palette House workshop in Tomodachi Life:
- Get at least 6 Mii residents on your island
- Wait for the Yellow Pondering event (a Mii with a yellow thought bubble)
- Accept the event to unlock the creation workshop
- You'll now have access to all custom items categories
6. Recreate in Palette House
Open Palette House and select the item type you want to customize. Then follow the Living the Grid recipe:
- Set the brush size to match (e.g., the smallest round brush for 8 px)
- Pick the first colour using the H/S/B values shown in Living the Grid
- Paint all cells of that colour on the canvas
- Switch to the next colour and repeat
- Use the Numbers/Labels view as your guide
What Custom Items Can You Create?
Through the Tomodachi Life catalog and Palette House, you can import images into:
- Clothing — T-shirts, tank tops, dresses with custom prints
- Hats & accessories — Custom headwear designs
- Room interiors — Wallpaper patterns and floor tiles
- Apartment items — Posters, album covers, decorations
- Island features — Various customizable surfaces
Tips for Better Image Imports
- Crop your image to focus on the most important part before uploading
- Increase brightness slightly — in-game colours tend to look darker than on screen
- Start with a low colour count and increase only if the result looks too flat
- For text or logos, use Pixel-perfect mode with Dither off
- For photos and portraits, use Smooth mode with Dither on
- Save your Living the Grid settings so you can revisit and adjust later
Sharing Your Creations
Once you've painted your design in-game, you can share it with the Tomodachi Life community. Screenshot your creation and post it to the tomodachi share website, Reddit, Discord, or social media. Many players use Living the Grid to import images into Tomodachi Life and share impressive custom items that look like they were directly uploaded.
